Love Fixer Upper? See 5 Ways to Bring Joanna's Style Home
If you're a fan of the HGTV hit show Fixer Upper (who isn't?), then you have undoubtedly coveted Joanna Gaines' impeccable design taste. By mixing the rustic and repurposed with streamlined and modern elements, Joanna always creates beautiful, envy-inducing spaces. Check out five of her foolproof interior design rules below to bring Fixer Upper's timeless farmhouse-chic style to your home!
NATURAL ACCENTS
When decorating in the farmhouse-chic style, it's important to incorporate natural elements with modern. In this office area, Joanna complemented the sleek, grey color palette of the rug and walls with rustic preserved boxwood topiaries and a rough finished wood desk. Add natural elements to your space with fresh flowers, exposed wood beams, stone countertops, indoor plants and potted dried herbs.
LET THERE BE LIGHT

One of Joanna's favorite ways to spruce up a room is to add a lot of light, preferably natural. She often forgoes window treatments in order to create a light, airy feel and make a small room look bigger. When an abundance of natural light is not available, light fixtures (like the row of lanterns in this kitchen) are a creative way to transform light into a beautiful design element. In this gorgeous space, Joanna also installed canned lights in the ceiling and hidden lighting under the cabinets.
CREATE A FOCAL POINT
Eye-catching focal points add character and dimension to a neutral color palette. In this dining room, Joanna incorporated a decorative rustic black sideboard into a mainly grey and brown space, adding an extra layer of color and detail. Decorative vent hoods, repurposed vintage furniture and bright pillows are other stunning ways to create focal points in your space.
IT'S ALL IN THE DETAILS
The farmhouse-chic style is defined by ease and simplicity. However, it's the small details that bring your room together and create a unique finished product. In this bathroom, a pair of framed vanity mirrors, a ruffled shower curtain and basin sinks add detailed charm without overpowering the small space. Add detail to your decor with hints of color, fun fabric prints, decorative vases and wall hangings. (Check out the beautiful hidden print on the back of the chair below!).
NEUTRAL ALL THE WAY

Neutral colors such as taupes, creams, grays, blacks and browns make up the signature farmhouse-chic design palette. Not only do neutral colors allow a focal point to stand out, but they create an airy feel that opens up and brightens a room. In this lovely living, kitchen and dining area, Joanna created a seamless flow by maintaining a grey and white theme with accents of taupe and rich browns throughout.
