How to Set Up a Donation Button on Twitch
Last updated Jul 6, 2020
Setting up your donations on Twitch isn’t as simple as enabling a “pay now” button. Some people prefer to set up donations with Streamlabs, others want to know how to set up PayPal donations on Twitch. These are just some of the myriad of third-party options for payment that are available for Twitch users. This article explains setting up a donations button on Twitch and several of the payment options available for users, including how to get donations on Twitch without PayPal.
We’ll also cover the impact of the Brave browser and the ease of using Brave Rewards to send and receive donations directly.
How to set up donations on Twitch – the basics
Cryptocurrencies
A popular method of payment is cryptocurrencies, simply because using them to send funds is simple and cheap, compared to other transactions. Twitch users can share their wallet’s address with viewers, allowing them to then send cryptocurrencies directly. The most common issue with sending cryptocurrencies is getting the correct type of wallet. For instance, Bitcoin cannot be sent to an Ethereum wallet, so labeling each address correctly is a must.
- Open up your wallet app.
- Click the RECEIVE button.
- Tap and copy the wallet’s address, which is a long list of random numbers and letters.
- Go to your channel, click EDIT PANELS, hit the + button, fill in the description fields, and add your address to the description.
- The description section is also a good place to specify the cryptocurrency you accept and an explanation of why users should donate to you.
Brave
The Brave browser simplifies the problems usually faced with cryptocurrency donations. Brave Rewards allows users to donate directly from wallet to wallet. Brave users can tip Twitch streamers directly. BAT is a utility token that runs on the Ethereum blockchain, making for a highly secure and private system. There’s no need to set up a separate process – just remind your viewers to download and use the Brave browser.
Twitch Bits
The official Twitch donation system, Twitch Bits, or cheers, are purchased directly from Amazon payments with real cash. Cheers are Twitch’s version of cryptocurrencies and each bit pays for special audio and visual alerts. Cheers are also displayed in the special badges in a chat; the more Bits used, the higher the badge.
- On your channel dashboard, select Partner Settings.
- Select Bits and Cheering.
- Viewers can now pay by typing cheer and the number of bits they wish to send you. Typing CHEER10 into a livestream’s chat tips them 10 bits.
Paypal
Without a doubt, Paypal is the easiest way to accept payment on Twitch. Despite that, it’s a method that does bring some drawbacks: there’s an increased risk of fraud, and PayPal adds an extra step in the payment process. To set up PayPal for donations, follow these steps:
- Set up an email or post a link in a channel chat.
- Go to your channel, click EDIT PANELS, hit the + button, fill in the description fields, and add your PAYPAL.ME link to the description.
- Fill in the description section with any further reasons why users should donate to you.
Third-party Twitch donations
A variety of third-party services exist to collect donations for Twitch users. Sites like Muxy, StreamLabs, Stream Elements, and Gaming for Good all create a donation page on their specific server which viewers can visit and donate.
- On your third party service page dashboard, click DONATION SETTINGS.
- Click the Paypal icon, or whatever payment option you prefer.
- In Settings, select your currency and a minimum donation amount. Using $5 as a minimum prevents lots of small donations.
- Hit SAVE SETTINGS
- Copy the donations address and save it to your Twitch channel page.
Donations – Helpful Info
Donations are a helpful way to make a small revenue on Twitch, although larger accounts generally use Twitch Subscriptions which pay substantially more for Twitch partners or affiliates.
Donations on Twitch are taxable and should be claimed on a tax return.
One of the downsides to using Paypal is chargebacks, where scammers pay using Paypal and then file a complaint with Paypal that they never received anything in return. Paypal usually sides with the buyer and withdraws the sum from the account. For many users, chargebacks alone are a reason to avoid using Paypal, despite the popularity and ease of the service.
Verbalizing your donation link in your channel is the best way to get donations through Twitch. If you’re a small channel, you could also create a list on your channel page for top donors, which publicly thank the donor and encourages repeat donations.
Twitch and Brave
The Twitch platform fits naturally into the new Brave internet economy. Third-party ads don’t work as well on Twitch; the majority of the ways to make money on Twitch rely on using the viewership base for a particular channel rather than relying on advertising income.
Brave, with its focus on user security and privacy, provides an easy way for Twitch streamers to draw increased revenue. Brave lets Twitch viewers bypass all the third-party donation systems, tipping their favorite streamers directly.

Many people on Twitch stream as a hobby. If you're thinking about going full-time, though, you'll need to raise some cash. Setting up donations on Twitch is one way you can do it!
Along with Twitch's built-in subscription service, some streamers can accept donations using the platform's built-in currency (Bits), which is purchased with real money.
If you don't want Twitch taking a cut of your donations, or you're unable to accept subscriptions or Bits, you'll need to look at other methods. PayPal is one of the best ways, but there are other third-party donation services that make it easy for people to send you some cash.
Twitch Bits and Subscriptions: The Official Method
As we mentioned above, Twitch offers two methods for people to support streamers by sending them cash: subscriptions, and Bits.
Subscriptions allow people to "subscribe" to a channel as a paid member. This gives them additional benefits, such as subscription-only chat emotes. Whenever someone subscribes, you'll be notified so you can recognize and/or thank that person for their support.
People can also donate at random with Twitch Bits. They buy this built-in currency with real money, and can then send it to a streamer by using the cheer command in that person's Twitch chat room.
This doesn't really buy the sender any benefits, but you can recognize donations in-stream. You'll also see an extra emphasis on any chat messages that contain the cheer command, making it a good way to interact with your audience.
You have to be a Twitch Affiliate or Partner to accept these, however. Also, even if you can accept bits or subscriptions, Twitch takes a percentage to help support the service.
Bits and subscriptions are accepted and enabled automatically on your channel as soon as you reach Twitch Affiliate status and set up your payment settings. However, you can tweak the donation settings in your Twitch channel dashboard.
Using Third-Party Donation Services
Twitch streamers who don't have Affiliate or Partner status are unable to accept payments or financial support directly through Twitch.
However, you can use third-parties to bring donations to your channel. Services like Streamlabs and Muxy allow you to expand your channel with additional payment options outside of Twitch.
If you use Streamlabs, you can add a donation option from the Streamlabs dashboard. To get started, click "Settings" in the menu on the left.
Go to Donation Settings > Methods to add your own payment accounts, including PayPal, Skrill, or a credit card.
Select your preferred method for payment, and then follow the onscreen instructions.
Methods tabs and select one of the available options." width="648″ height="450″ src="https://www.howtogeek.com/pagespeed_static/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif" onload="pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);" onerror="this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);"/>
You can change the currency, minimum donation amount, and other settings for Streamlabs under Donation Settings > Settings.
Settings tabs." width="650″ height="470″ src="https://www.howtogeek.com/pagespeed_static/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif" onload="pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);" onerror="this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);"/>
Once you have a payment method (or multiple methods) active on your Streamlabs account, other people on Twitch can donate to you directly via your Streamlabs tip page. The link appears prominently under "Donations Settings."

Anyone who views your stream can donate to you directly via that page. You'll need to advertise the link during your stream, though, to let people know how they can donate.
Adding a PayPal Donation Link
You can also drop a simple PayPal donation button or PayPal.me link in your channel description. This allows people on Twitch with a PayPal account to send donations directly to your account.
To change your channel description, head to the Twitch website, and then click your channel icon at the top right. Select "Channel" from the drop-down menu to access your Twitch channel page.
Click "About," and then toggle-On the "Edit Panels" option.
Click the large add button that appears below it, and then select the "Add a Text or Image Panel" option. Give the panel a name and make sure you link your PayPal donation information here.
Once you're done, click "Submit."
A PayPal link or button will be added to your Twitch profile. Anyone who wants to donate can now click the link or button and send you money directly.
Keep in mind that PayPal will charge a fee for any donations you receive, as well as conversion fees for donations made in other currencies.
Build a following and perhaps a career
Twitch is one of the most popular streaming platforms on the web, with more than 15 million unique daily viewers and over four million streamers. For many of these streamers, Twitch is not only a way to have fun and share a passion with fans—it's a way to generate revenue.
While one way to make money is through premium subscribers, another way is through donations. There are multiple ways to set up donations on the Twitch platform, both directly through Twitch and through third-party platforms.
If you're good at video games and entertaining on camera, you might be able to make a bit of spending money by giving someone something to watch.
How to Accept Bits on Twitch
Bits are the primary medium for viewers to donate to Twitch streamers they like and enjoy. Make a funny joke or pull off a one-in-a-million snipe and you might find yourself on the receiving end of an avalanche of Bits. There's just one problem: You need to be a Twitch affiliate to receive Bits.
While anyone can send Bits, only those in the Twitch Affiliate program are allowed to receive them—and qualifying isn't easy. In order to qualify for the program, you need to have at least 500 minutes of broadcasting in the last 30 days. That's a bit over 8.3 hours.
You also must have seven unique broadcasts over 30 days, with an average of at least three concurrent viewers during that time. Finally, you must have a total of 50 or more followers.
Qualifying for the Twitch Affiliate program requires a significant time investment. Once you qualify, Twitch will email you and send an invitation via the notification tab on Twitch.tv.
You'll earn one cent per Bit used to cheer you on. This means that for every 100 Bits donated to your channel, you will earn $1.
How to Set Up Donations Through Third Parties
If the idea of becoming a Twitch Affiliate sounds like too much work, you can use a service like Streamlabs to set up donations on Twitch through platforms like PayPal, Skrill, and Unitpay. Setting up these services is as simple as linking your account so the donations have a place to go.
If you verify your Streamlabs account, you can accept donations directly from credit cards. However, verification has vague requirements including:
- A proven track record of legitimate use
- A consistent pattern of concurrent viewers and followers
What these requirements mean is not clear, but it does mean you won't get verified after just one or two nights of streaming. You will need to put in effort before you qualify, but this isn't an issue if you have your sights set on becoming a Twitch Affiliate.
PayPal isn't the only option, however. Streamlabs has numerous integrations including Patreon, Extra Life, Tiltify, TippeeStream, and more. These services make it easy to accept donations without forcing your viewers to purchase Bits from Twitch's system in order to donate.
Streamlabs is a tool that serves as an overlay for your Twitch stream, but you can also use it to synchronize settings across other streaming platforms, including YouTube, Mixer, and more. You can customize your tip page within Streamlabs to further entice viewers to donate, but it isn't a requirement—and you don't have to have a Premium account to receive tips.
Set Up Donations With a PayPal Link
There is a third option that many streamers overlook, and that is simply adding a link to donate. People support creators they enjoy. If you give your viewers a way to support you, they're likely to do so even if it means following a link away from Twitch.
You can't add a link directly to your Twitch bio. However, you can add a panel to your Twitch channel from within your Twitch Channel settings that serves the same purpose.
This panel can include an image that you can link to another site (in this case, your PayPal donation link.) You can also include text to invite viewers to donate.
To set up donations on Twitch this way, all you need to know is your PayPal.Me address. This address will look something like paypal.me/username. When someone follows the link, it will take them to a page where they can donate however much they want.
The more customized your donation page is, the more likely someone will send a few dollars your way. Make sure to set the profile image with a picture of yourself or a logo of your Twitch stream. Rather than just a link, you should create a donation button that invites viewers to click.
Once you have several donation options set up on Twitch, all you have to do is focus on entertaining your viewers. Play games well (or don't), but make sure anyone that spends time watching you enjoys themselves. No one generates a giant fan base overnight, but with dedicated time and a regular streaming schedule, you can build a Twitch career of your own.

Twitch streamers rely on the support of their viewers to continue creating content. It takes time, energy, and money to produce a good show, and any support you can give them will help them make the next step.
While most streamers who "make it" can generally earn from sponsors and affiliate links, it can take a long while for someone to get there. If you find someone entertaining, consider supporting them financially. This article will help show you how.
How to Donate to a Twitch Streamer
1. Subscribe to Your Favorite Twitch Streamer
Another great way to support your favorite streamer is through subscriptions. Affiliate and Partnered broadcasters are able to monetize their accounts in this way. There are three tiers of subscriptions, ranging in price from $4.99 – $24.99. In exchange for a Twitch subscription, you can use the channel emotes, watch ad-free, and participate in subscriber-only content.
2. How to Get Twitch Subscriptions for Free
If you have an Amazon Prime account, you can link it to your Twitch account to activate your Prime Gaming. Prime Gaming allows you to subscribe to one channel per month for no extra charge.
Get a Free Sub Every Month
With Prime Gaming Through Amazon Prime
Often, if you are a true fan but are unable to subscribe to the streamer financially, another loyal fan may purchase one for you. It is called sub gifting.
While I wouldn't recommend begging for subs directly if you frequent the channel often, interact with the chat, are kind to other viewers, and compliment the streamer on their content and emotes, you'll get a gift subscription. Don't be sad if it doesn't happen. Instead, find another way to help the streamer.
3. How to Donate with Twitch Bits
If the streamer hasn't set up a donation tab or if you feel uncomfortable donating through a third-party site, you can also give using Twitch Bits. Twitch Bits are the in-built currency set up by Twitch. As a viewer, you can purchase them directly from the company for a small markup on their value. Each Twitch Bit is worth 1 US Penny.
Number of Bits | Price in USD |
---|---|
100 Bits | $1.40 |
500 Bits | $7.00 |
1500 Bits | $19.95 |
5000 Bits | $64.40 |
10000 Bits | $126.00 |
25000 Bits | $308.00 |
People commonly donate bits 100 at a time (a $1 tip), but some like to add a bit or two between words in a comment to make it stand out. Donating with bits is called cheering, and a special animated emote is used. People can also be ranked on channels dependant on the number of bits they've donated.
You can earn free bits by watching ads on Twitch or filling out surveys.
4. How to Donate Directly to a Twitch Streamer
Directly donating to a streamer means that they get 100% of your donation. Twitch doesn't take a bit of it for their use. To donate to a streamer, they must have set it up themselves through a third-party company.
To donate to a streamer, scroll down to their profile and find their donation panel. Click through to the link. Depending on the streamer, you may either pay cash or through crypto-currency.
An example of what a donation page looks like through Streamlabs.
Follow the instructions on the page you are sent. You are often given the option to add a special note and to choose a GIF.
5. Help a Streamer by Purchasing Items Through Affiliate Links
Many streamers can set up Affiliate links, even before they can get sponsored. The affiliates will vary depending on the streamer, but they generally have something to with the content, gaming equipment, or sports drinks.
Generally, you can get a 10-15% discount if you buy through Affiliate links, and the streamer will get a small kick-back as well. If you need to upgrade your equipment, it is worth browsing your favorite streamers' channels to see what they have to offer.
You can also support a streamer by purchasing their merchandise if they have some set up. You can usually find t-shirts, sweatshirts, or coffee mugs.
Twitch streamers can also show these sales to potential sponsors so that they can see that the streamer's community actively supports them.
How to Donate to a Twitch Streamer Without Money
If you want to help your favorite streamer, but you don't have the funds to donate financially, there are several things you can do.
- Engage with the chat and welcome new members. Add value to the community by being helpful, funny, and interacting with both the streamer and other viewers.
- Join their Discord and be active. Post relevant memes and help where you can. Invite your real-life friends to join it and support the streamer.
- Reach out to the streamer and ask if they need help with anything. If you are creative, you might be able to help with their graphics or emotes.
- Consider being a moderator, if asked. While it can be a hard job at times, streamers appreciate those they can count on.
- Promote their stream. Share their social media posts. Let people know how much you enjoy their content and why.
These simple things can help attract more viewers, some of whom may be able to help out financially.
Conclusion
Steamers work hard and it takes a while for them to see any return on their investment. Anything you can do to help support your favorite content creators can help them improve their channel and produce broadcasts in the future.
- You can set up text-to-speech donations on Twitch through a widget called an "Alert Box."
- With text-to-speech donations enabled, viewers can attach messages to their donations, which will then be read aloud on your stream.
- You can also set up a blacklist of words that the text-to-speech robot won't read.
- Visit Business Insider's Tech Reference library for more stories.
If you're active on Twitch, you might have seen popular streamers get donations from viewers. Many streamers also use text-to-speech donations, which lets a robot read each donor's name and attached message out loud.
These text-to-speech donations are a great way to acknowledge your donors and encourage more people to donate.
Keep reading to learn how to set up text-to-speech donations on your Twitch channel, using Streamlabs on your Mac or PC.
How to set up text-to-speech donations on Twitch

7. Scroll down to the "Profanity Filter" section, click on the drop-down menu, and click on the customization settings you prefer. You can also set custom "bad words" to include in the profanity filter; just type in the word or phrase you want to blacklist, then click "Blacklist."
8. Once you're done customizing your settings, scroll all the way down and click "Save Settings" to apply your changes.

Twitch bits
Twitch bits are the internal currency of the Twitch. Your viewers will have to buy them in exchange for real money. They can donate you bits through typing a simple command in your chatbox.
When viewers give you bits, they get rewards like special badges that are displayed alongside their names in the chat. When someone donates you bits, exclusive audio and visual alert onscreen is triggered on your screen following the name of the person who gave.
Here's how you can enable this option on your channel.
- Go to your channel then your dashboard.
- Click on "Partner Settings" then "Bits and Cheering."
- Now viewers will be able to donate you bits.
Your viewers can donate you bits just by typing "Cheer" followed by the number of bits they want to send, e.g. cheer5.
Though it's a quick way to receive money, some streamers avoid it. It's because Twitch deduct their cut too and there is a threshold of 100$ before you can withdraw your payment.
Don't worry; there are other methods discussed below. You can opt for the one which is the most suitable for you.

Set up Donations on Twitch through Third-party apps
There are third-party apps like Gaming For Good, Muxy, Stream Elements, and StreamLabs, which allow you to receive money from Twitch.
We are focusing on StreamLabs for now as it's the most popular and preferred one currently. Here's how you can integrate it.

This guide will take you through different methods to integrate payment gateways on your Twitch account. Choose the one which suits you best and get started right away.

Today, streamers have access to a myriad of ways to make money while playing games. One of the most profound is that of using donations in Twitch. Viewers can "tip" you whether they like the game play, they think your good or love the entertainment value. So, how do you set it up?
Perhaps the easiest method for setting up donations in Twitch is using Streamlabs in conjunction with PayPal.
In this tutorial, I'll show you how to set up your donations link or button and add it to your Twitch channel. You will need a PayPal account for this specific option.[template >
Why PayPal?
I've used PayPal on a regular basis since 2003. It's been a stable system, and I have yet to experience issues. In fact, I used it to spearhead my online sales back when I owned and operated my computer business.
And because I have a PayPal debit card, funds are immediately available to me as soon as someone sends money. I also use it for client payments as I am a freelance writer.
Why Streamlabs?
Streamlabs is simply an easy system to use and will track donations sent to your channel. Most of the tools are automated and setting up donations in Twitch is merely a few minutes of your time.
In reality, Streamlabs has far more going for it. But for now, we're just going to focus on the donations area.
Why Not Just Use Bits?
In Twitch, you can use bits to tip your favorite streamer. However, these are subject to fees while costing you more money to purchase. For instance, if you wanted 100 bits, it'll run you around $1.40. Then, the streamer is taxed by Twitch for using the service.
In the long run, less money is actually exchanging hands during the entire transaction. Not to mention it could literally take months before the Twitch personality actually sees that money as it has to hit the payable threshold.
With a donation link, broadcasters get money almost immediately from viewers.
Setting Up Streamlabs Donations
The first thing you'll need to do is connect your PayPal account to Streamlabs. This is so the Streamlabs donation page works and the system can track your income.
From the Streamlabs dashboard, click the "Donation Settings" link on the left.
Streamlabs supports a few different types of payment processing options. You can even use cryptocurrency tips by connecting your Coinbase account. For this tutorial, though, we're just going to set up our PayPal account.
Click the option for PayPal.
Input your PayPal email and click, "Submit."
The PayPal email address is then added to your profile.
Copy the URL for your tip page. This is the address you'll need to put into Twitch. You can also use it on social media, websites, emails or anywhere else you use links.

Add the Link for Donations in Twitch
Next, you will need to go to your Twitch channel. Note, this is not your Twitch Dashboard. You need to edit the panels on the front end of the channel itself.
Click the "Edit Panels" tool on the left. It's right below your channel's video feed.
Click the big "+" field in your channel. This lets you add a new panel for visitors to see.
Click the option to add a text or image panel.
Now, there are two ways you can add donations in Twitch. You can use a basic link or you can design and upload your own button image.
Using Button Images
To use a button on your Twitch channel, you need an image that is 320 pixels wide. That's because this is the size Twitch will automatically use for the graphic. If it's bigger or smaller, the system will automatically scale the image.
Personally, I use Photoshop to fine-tune my own buttons so they are the correct dimensions.
Add your image and paste the donation URL from Streamlabs.
Click "Submit" to save your donation button.
Congratz! You now have a button for your donations in Twitch.
Using a Text Link for Donations in Twitch
Buttons are nice, but what if you want a text link instead? Twitch uses its own markdown language. Which means you cannot use HTML when adding links to text. However, adding a link in Twitch isn't all that difficult.
Paste this coding into the Description area of the panel:
There are two elements of this markdown code you need to change:
- The text of what the link says. In this example, I use "send me money." You can use any text you want.
- The URL of your Streamlabs donation page. This is the URL in the parenthesis. Replace my example with your own URL.
The thing to note here is you need the brackets for the text and the parenthesis for the URL. Without these, the link will not work. And make sure there are no spaces in between the brackets and parenthesis.
Click the "Submit" button to save your text.
And now you have a text link for donations in Twitch. This will open a new browser window and give visitors a chance to send a donation.
Turn Off the Edit Panels Function in Twitch
When you're done, scroll back up and turn off the Edit Panels function.
Can't you just use a PayPal "Donation" button instead?
If you've ever played around in a PayPal account, you'll find the system is capable of creating donation buttons while giving you the code to copy and paste.
However, you won't be able to use these PayPal donation buttons as Twitch doesn't allow HTML coding. Although these kinds of buttons work great for websites, you won't be able to use them in your live stream.
Can you use the Streamlabs URL in the chat window?
Absolutely. That is, as long as your channel allows URLs. Some chat settings prevent links from being displayed. It's a way to reduce the impact of spam.
Personally, I use Nightbot to help moderate my channel. And I am able to set a timer that allows Nightbot to share my donation URL every 45 minutes.
Make Money with Your Channel
One of the reasons I like using donations in Twitch is because anyone can make money in this fashion. You don't have to worry about becoming an affiliate to accept bits or subscribers.
Theoretically, you could start making money inside the first five minutes of live streaming.
Don't get me wrong, being an affiliate will open a ton of doors for making money from your channel. However, donations in Twitch have no requirements other than having a PayPal account.[template
